Starting college is an exciting new chapter for any young adult. However, the moving process is no small task. It requires planning and organization. Affordable Quality Moving and Storage is ready to help you reduce the stress of moving for college. We’ve been moving college students across Southern California for well over 20 years, and we know what it takes to make your move as stress-free as possible, whether you’re going to college locally, in another state, or even in another country.
Check out the following college moving tips and tricks from our SoCal movers:
Tip #1: Sell or Donate the Things You Don’t Need
Now is the perfect time to go through your room and get rid of the things you don’t need or want anymore. Whether you sell or donate them, you can get them out of your space, so you don’t have to pack and move them for no reason.
Tip #2: Develop a Packing System
A great way to stay organized while packing is to color-code your belongings, such as your bathroom items, kitchen items, and bedroom items. It also helps you keep track of your things so that you don’t lose anything. Organizing as you pack will also help you weed out the items that you no longer need, and you can sell or donate them or put them in storage for later. Once you arrive on campus or in your new town, you’ll know exactly where everything is packed, which will also make the unpacking process go much smoother.

Tip #3: Pack an Overnight Bag
Chances are you might be too tired to unpack when you first move into your dorm room, especially if you are attending college far away. Thinking ahead and packing an overnight bag will prevent you from needing to rummage through your boxes for clean clothes.
Some of the things you might want to put in your overnight bag:
- A change of clothes
- Pajamas
- Toiletries
- Snacks
Tip #4: Check & Measure Your New Space
If possible, go to your dorm, apartment, or other place you’ll be living during college. You’ll want to see how much space you have for your things. Measuring can be useful as well, as this will help you determine what can fit where. This is also an opportunity to see where entrances, exits, stairs, and elevators are located, which will come in handy on moving day.
Tip #5: Get Your Services Set Up
Before moving day comes around, you’ll want to set up your services like cable, internet, and utilities. That way, they’ll be set up when you arrive.
Tip #6. Try to Move on a Weekday
Most people will be moving in on the weekend, so try to move on a weekday if you can. This can make it a lot easier to move your boxes and furniture in, without competing for parking or navigating overly crowded halls.
Tip #7: Book Movers in Advance
Finding movers last minute can be a difficult task, which is why we recommend booking movers in advance.
