Becoming a homeowner is a huge milestone in your life. The feelings you’re experiencing are probably similar to that of a whirlwind. We know moving can be hectic and things can be forgotten, but when you switch from renting to owning—especially if you are moving into a house from an apartment—there may be a few things that you didn’t even realize you needed.
Affordable Quality Moving and Storage is here to make this transition a smooth one. Below are several things every homeowner needs.
1) Homeowners’ Insurance
Now that you have a place of your own, you’ll want to do everything you can to protect that investment. Homeowners’ insurance might be a requirement for your mortgage, but it’s a good idea to have it even it isn’t. The last thing you want to think about is unexpected damage to your new home, but a little forethought can save you from serious financial strain in the future.
Homeowners’ insurance can cover:
- Fire damage
- Flood and water damage
- Severe weather damage
- Vandalism and theft
2) Home Warranty
A home warranty may turn out to be a new homeowner’s best friend. This is a contract that covers repairing and replacing certain systems and appliances in your home, usually for one year. Depending on the level of coverage, a home warranty may help with fixing or replacing your air conditioning system, dishwasher, stove, oven, microwave, and more. Some home warranties also include or offer discounts on extras like air conditioning tune-ups and water heater inspections.
3) A Tool Kit
Remember the good ol’ days of calling your landlord to fix the sink, doorbell, thermostat, etc.? As a homeowner, you are now in charge of these responsibilities. This means you’re going to have to brush up on your handyman skills. To do that, you’re going to need a set of tools.
Invest in a tool kit equipped with different types of screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, drills, hammers, levelers, measuring tape, etc. These tools will allow you to fix things around the house—unless you can set aside money for a repairman to come and address issues as they arise.
(Remember, Google is your best friend to help you fix things along the way!)
4) Other Tools & Supplies
When you’re a homeowner, you’re responsible for maintaining your property. Sometimes, it will take more than a tool kit to make some minor repairs. There are things like cleaning and maintenance to consider, plus everyday items that could come in handy.
There are a few other tools and supplies that every homeowner needs:
- Ladder(s)
- Emergency preparedness kit
- Flashlight
- Fire extinguisher
- Vacuum
- Cleaning supplies
- Hose
- Measuring tape
5) New Alarms for Your Safety
In your old apartment, your landlord was likely required to have the appropriate smoke and carbon monoxide detectors installed and inspected.
In your new home, you’ll want to make sure you have these systems in place. Many homes will have these alarms already installed, but they can either be too old or the previous owner took their carbon monoxide detector with them (smoke detectors are usually built into the ceiling or wall).
Inspect your current detectors, replace any that are too old or defective, change the batteries of ones that are still good, and purchase additional units for other rooms in the house.
You should also look to invest in a security system to protect your family and home from possible burglars and intruders.
