Essential Moving Checklist for Santa Clarita Residents

A move goes smoothly when there is a plan. Without one, small things get missed: utilities left in the wrong name, boxes that never got labeled, documents buried in the last box loaded. Having a reliable moving team ensures that every step is handled efficiently and your move stays on track. This checklist is built for residents of the Santa Clarita Valley who want to stay ahead of the process from the first week to moving day and beyond.

Whether you are moving locally within the SCV, heading out of state, or relocating a business, the same fundamentals apply. Call (661) 622-2636 for a Free In-Home Estimate, or reach us online to get started.

Eight Weeks Before Your Move

This is the right time to make decisions before the schedule gets tight.

Decide what level of help you need: full-service movers, a packing crew, storage, or some combination. Our team handles all of these from the same Santa Clarita office, so you can coordinate everything in one conversation. Schedule your free in-home estimate early. An estimator will walk through your home, document what needs to move, and give you a written quote. This is the single most useful thing you can do in this window because it locks in accurate pricing before schedules fill up.

Begin decluttering as soon as possible. Moving is a natural time to reduce what you own. Anything you will not use in the new space does not need to be packed, transported, and unpacked. If you are moving to a different state, research your destination now: schools, utility providers, HOA rules, and parking restrictions at the new address all affect your planning.

Four to Six Weeks Before Your Move

Confirm your moving date and service scope in writing with your moving company. If you are adding packing and unpacking services, storage, or commercial logistics, get those details documented now. Renters should notify their landlord according to their lease terms.

Begin collecting boxes, packing tape, and protective wrap if you are handling any packing yourself. Contact all utilities to schedule transfers or cancellations: water, gas, electricity, internet, and trash pickup. Each needs to be handled at the right time. Update your address with your bank, employer, healthcare providers, insurance companies, subscriptions, and the post office.

Two to Three Weeks Before Your Move

Start packing the rooms you use least: guest rooms, storage areas, seasonal items, and decorations. Label every box on the sides, not just the top, with the destination room and a brief description of contents. Boxes get stacked in trucks and hallways, and the top label becomes invisible. Labeling the sides means our crew can place boxes in the right rooms at the destination without asking you about everyone.

Photograph the back of your TV, sound system, and any other electronics before disconnecting anything. This makes setup at the new address significantly faster. Confirm parking arrangements at both addresses for moving day. In Canyon Country, Castaic, and areas with narrower roads or restricted access, truck placement can affect how quickly the job moves. Let your coordinator know about any potential issues before the day.

One Week Before Your Move

Pack an essentials bag or box for each person in the household: medications, chargers, a change of clothes, toiletries, and anything needed within the first 48 hours. Keep this with you, not on the truck. Do a final check of outdoor areas: patio furniture, garden tools, sheds, and items in the garage that may not have been part of the original estimate.

Confirm your appointment details with our team one more time. You want to know the arrival window, crew size, number of trucks, and the right contact for moving day. Back up your digital files before the move, and make sure any specialty items, safes, or fragile pieces have been communicated to your coordinator in advance.

Moving Day

Be present at both the origin and destination addresses if you can. Walk through your home with the crew lead before they begin and point out anything that needs special handling or that is not going on the truck. Do a final walkthrough of the original home before the crew leaves: check every closet, cabinet, outdoor area, and any storage space that is easy to overlook.

Review the final invoice against your written estimate before signing. If there is a line item you do not recognize, ask about it before the crew departs.

After the Move

Check boxes against your inventory list and document any damage in writing and with photographs before the moving crew leaves the destination. File a change of address with the post office if you have not already done so. California residents should update their driver’s license within 10 days of establishing a new address.

If you used storage services as part of your move, confirm access details and any relevant dates. When we handle the move-in, the first two months of storage are included at no additional cost.
