We’re all spending a lot more time at home these days, and a lot of our rooms are pulling double duty as an office and/or a classroom. With so much happening from home, now is an ideal time to get things organized and tidy in a way that’s sustainable. Life will never stay completely organized 100% of the time, but the easier you make it to organize your room, the more you’ll do it.
So, with that in mind, here are 10 really simple ways to organize more efficiently at home!
#1. Make a List of Every Room/Space You Want to Organize
Get started by making a list of every room you want to organize, and then list every space in each room that needs to be tackled. For example, “Kitchen: junk drawer, pantry, under-the-sink cabinet.” When you list everything out, you won’t forget anything and can tackle one space at a time.
#2: Get Drawer Organizers for the “Junk” Drawer
Everyone has a miscellaneous drawer for odds and ends. Some ambitiously cluttered people might have multiple! An easy way to immediately make a junk drawer more usable is to buy drawer organizers. These organizers slip into your drawer and allow you to find what you’re looking for faster and easier. Less digging, more doing.
#3: Repurpose Old Bowls & Cups
If you’ve replaced your bowls or cups recently and your dinnerware cupboard is running out of room, use your oldest or least favorite bowls as desk organizers. Put your cotton swabs in an old cup, keep your paperclips in a snack bowl, etc. This makes room in your cupboards while minimizing the amount of free-floating Stuff™ sitting around.
#4: Hang Multiple Pieces on One Clothes Hanger
You can turn each of your wire clothes hangers into a clothing organizer using nothing but discarded soda cans. Here’s how:
- Break off the tab at the top of the soda can
- Slide one end of the tab onto the metal hook of a wire hanger
- Hang a second hanger hook into the other end of the soda tab
- Hang the first hanger back on the rack
Using this trick opens up room on your rack, and it lets you hang entire outfits together instead of just individual pieces of clothing.
#5: Install File Holders on the Wall
One of the most common forms of clutter in your home is probably a combination of mail and documents you still need to do something about but you’re not sure where to put it. Buy yourself a wall-mounted document holder. That helps keep your paper files in a convenient place (read: where it won’t get buried), but it also clears up your desk space.
#6. Use Over-the-Door Storage
You can easily add storage space in most rooms by using over-the-door hooks or storage units. In addition to keeping clutter out of cabinets and off your counters, it offers a way to display items you use frequently for easy access.
#7. Utilize Drawer Dividers
You can actually maximize storage capacity and organize drawers at the same time with dividers or other types of drawer organizers. By creating different spots for each category of item, you can find things easier and will have more space for everything. It’s a win-win!
#8. Wall Hooks Offer an Attractive Storage Option
You can maximize wall space with wall hooks, which are often inexpensive and easy to install. You can also display some of your favorite items, like your hats or purses. Hooks inside closets and pantries also offer a way to free up storage space, and these hidden wall hooks don’t have to be as attractive as those you install in the main rooms of your house.
#9. Organize & Put Away Seasonal Items
If you have clothes, decorations, or other seasonal items in your home, consider ways to store these while you don’t need them. You can put them in your garage, storage unit, or another area that you do not frequently access, instead of keeping them in your closet where they take up space.
#10. Use Storage Racks & Boxes in Your Pantry & Fridge
Stackable storage racks and bins can help you maximize space in your pantry and fridge. It also helps you see what food you have so you can eat it before it expires! You might be surprised to find how much space you have once you’ve organized it all.
Why You Should Organize Your Home
What are the benefits of organizing your home? While it's an essential step when you're moving, there are other advantages as well. Some of these are more of a "feeling" that you get when you complete a difficult task and get to enjoy a clean and organized home. Others are more practical and tangible. Either way, you probably won't regret making the effort to organize, whether it's just one room or your entire house.
Here are a few benefits you can experience by decluttering and organizing your home:
- You may feel more focused and clear when you live in an organized home.
- You may experience less stress and feel less overwhelmed by all the unfinished tasks and belongings that used to be lying around.
- You may feel lighter, somehow; less burdened by disorganized belongings.
- You can even save money by finding items that you thought were lost.
- You can avoid health problems caused by mold, dust, and even insect problems that can be caused by clutter and uncleanliness.
- You may sleep better at night, knowing that everything in your house is in order.
- Your home will be more aesthetically pleasing without the clutter.
